Baltimore Sailabration celebrating anniversary of the War of 1812

Jock and I sailed aboard  Skean Dhu for a memorable week during the parade of sail activities celebrating the anniversary of the War of 1812. Excitement and pride for the city we live in captures the essence of our sailing trip. Rafting up with friends, sharing the fireworks with family and Alberg friends, hearing and seeing the roaring precision of the  Blue Angels overhead and enjoying the company of the Brits on the SCC No Hard Feelings Cruise at a raft-up and party ashore were highlights of the amazing week. Another highlight was walking to Mama’s on the Half Shell in Canton for some tasty seafood with Renee’ and Mark. Cooperative weather the whole time, save for the journey home, when we experienced a bit of drizzle.

Since our trip, I have been painting a large work( 24″ x 30″ ) of the Pride of Baltimore. I have been working on this oil painting for about 9 weeks now and so far I am really pleased with the progress. I expect to have a picture of the finished product posted in the near future. (To see the final painting, click here.)

When I first started painting I painted coastal scenes, mostly of the New England Coast. It has so much character with its rocky rugged coast. But since moving to Maryland and sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, I now not only paint coastal scenes aroung the Bay, but boats and ships as well. A ship like the Pride of Baltimore is very challenging to paint because of all the details and the number of lines that need to be depicted to get the feel of the boat right.

Annisquam on Cape Ann

One of my favorite spots in Annisquam is this view of Lobster Cove upon entering Annisquam Village. A few years back, I painted this scene with a kayaker in the distance as a gift for my good friend Nancy. Not pictured here are the inviting chairs overlooking the cove beneath  the sweeping willow tree. It is especially beautiful at sunset.

Plein Air this Summer

Plein Air Landscape Paintings

Cylburn Arboreteum was a delightful ,sunny and warm mid-morning location for this study which took about 90 minutes to complete. The major challenge was painting quickly before the sun’s reflections moved or changed completely.

Western Run field study, completed in about an hour, was also a challenge because of the hot and humid conditions. The horse grazing pasture was absolutely brilliant in the hazy sun.

From a different Western Run vantage point on the same property as above, the lazy river/stream study was compelling with the distant haze and water reflections.

It is always fun being out with a bunch of oil painters on a beautiful day, painting beautiful landscapes.

Besides the landscape oil paintings done plein air above, other places I have painted this summer include Shawan Downs, Harford County,

Mantua Mill Road and Baltimore County, Maryland sites.

This week I am headed to the Museum of Industry in Baltimore City.

Two New Animal Commissions

I have recently finished a commission of a Rabbit  (Shown Above).

I am also currently working on a commission of a German Shepherd.

These animal portraits are both original oil paintings. Capturing the light illuminating the ears was a challenge but rewarding.

Welcome to Carol’s painting website.

These blog posts are where you will find updates on what I have been up to in my painting endeavors. I will let you know about commissions I receive for paintings and show you progress on paintings I am working on. I tend to use a realistic style, perhaps somewhat impressionistic at times. My subject matter includes landscapes, coastal scenes, maritime scenes and portraits of both people and animals.

The list of various animals I have painted is lengthy: lions, tigers (no bears, oh my), cows, fox, dogs, and birds such as parrots, egrets, pelicans, piping plovers, and ring-necked pheasants. I have also painted a number of horses, but also horses and hounds on fox hunts.

Then there is the architecture I paint if it is interesting. There have been a number of commissions to paint people’s homes, but I have also painted barns, stables, row houses and other buildings that catch my eye and hopefully yours too.

The maritime and landscape paintings range from cypress swamps to fields and pastures, beaches, and boats on the water. There are rugged New England / Maine coastal scenes to sandy beach scenes around the Chesapeake and the Caribbean. I have been commissioned to paint several boats and have done a number of boat or yacht paintings, both sail boats and power boats. Spinnakers are always fun because of the color.

I will also let you know when I have paintings in an art gallery or I take part in an art show.
