Heading Home for the Holidays- Ellis Commission/Christmas Cards

What a privilege to be part of a surprise! Lori commissioned me to make Christmas cards featuring their boat ” Seaworthy”. After reviewing a lot of different photos, I liked the concept of “Seaworthy” passing Thomas Point Light en route home from Florida. Lori decided to surprise Jim with the original painting for their anniversary.

Walter’s Women’s Committee Celebrates 50

Designing the invitation for the Walters Art Museum Women’s Committee 50th anniversary luncheon at Baltimore Club was an honor .  Working with Mary Ellen Kaplan and Emily Powderly was pure joy! The original painting below was given to the new Walters Art Museum Director, Julia Marciari-Alexander. The image of the painting, ” Black-Eyed Susan”  was also used to produce commemorative scarves in recognition of the 50th.

Leader of the Scent Painting – Second Sitting

This second sitting I worked on the background and foliage during this sitting.

Wow, I don’t know what happened to the lighting when I took this photograph, but it is a bit off in terms of the color of the painting. I will put up another picture of the painting when I am done so you can see the difference. If you click here, you can see the progress from the earlier stage of the painting and how the background landscape has filled in.

Horse In Barn Painting – Final Sitting

Here is the finished product! Stay tuned for my next work in progress.

If you would like to see the prior two stages of this painting, you can click here: First SittingSecond Sitting There was a much more dramatic change between the first and second sitting of this painting. For the third sitting of this painting it was mainly putting fine touches on the horses face and adding some detail to the stable. This horse was such a pleasure to meet and then paint. He had such a gentle demeanor and wonderful eyes.

Remember that the picture I just snapped quickly and probably doesn’t do the painting justice. I will get it professionally photographed but if I put the high quality, high pixel count photos on the website they would take forever to load.

Leader of the Scent Painting – First Sitting

Another variation on the theme of Fox Hunting. Here is the first sitting for the third painting of this theme.

This painting has been fairly difficult to do. First painting all the dogs, and painting them in a variety of positions has been an interesting challenge. But it is also the size. Even though the oil painting is fairly large, the dogs’ heads and bodies aren’t that big and require very fine brush strokes and a steady hand while painting.

Horse in Barn Painting Second Sitting

As promised, here is the product of my second sitting on Horse In Barn. I am going to have one more sitting for final touch ups and then it will be complete! It you look at the first sitting where I was roughing in the painting, you can see that the neck and head didn’t seem to be at the correct angles in the painting. I have now added more details to the horses face in the painting and have fixed and added detail to the horse’s neck and visible part of its body.

Sly Fox Second Sitting

Below is the much more refined Fox after the second sitting.

I have been working on painting in the details of his face. The background paint is still very rough. I haven’t painted in any details there yet, that will come later. You can compare the progress in the fox painting by looking back at my last blog post.

Sly Fox Rough In Painting

Here is the very rough first pass at my new fox painting. I will update with a more refined fox tomorrow.

At this point the painting almost looks Fauvist, but it will change and become more traditional as it progresses.
