At the end of January, I started on another commission for a friend who envisioned a beach scene above her mantle in the family room. After a few meetings , concept drawings, and measurements , she decided upon a family favorite destination- Eleuthra. It was a pure delight painting the beautiful pink sands, turquoise surf and fluffy white clouds when the outside thermometer was in the single digits! Here is the progression of the painting. From rough start to nearly finishing Amy’s vision , the 2′ x 3′ canvas takes shape with each additional paint layer. Each step of the way, Amy provided invaluable input from the sand color, people location, and dune grasses. After her approval, we picked out a frame to her liking. Painting is now at photographers and will be framed sometime over the next week. Stay tned for the finished result.
Another Commission- wish I was there!

Isle au Haut- a Christmas gift
My good friend Martha contacted me in the fall with an idea for her husband’s surprise Christmas gift of a painting depicting the area where he invited her to marry him many years ago. I absolutely love this romantic commission! The challenge was to not just design the perfect concept , but also have it fit into a specified area above their mantel in their living room. Martha and I met numerous times to review various concept studies and this is the one she selected as the subject for the painting – depicting Maine’s colorful rocky coast. Her husband was thrilled with the painting and in fact he sent me a picture on Christmas day with it aptly hanging in place above the cozy fireplace.
Maryland, My Maryland! Finished Painting
AHOY! Well, it was a long journey painting this maritime painting of many objects which are found in our family room. I particularly like the sheen on the captain’s face with the numerous highlights.
I have several posts about the painting showing the progress in this marine themed still life. To see them, click the following links:

Alberg 30 Painting – 50th Anniversary Year
Mike Lehman, a great photographer, sailor and friend, kindly gave me permission to paint one of his beautiful photos of three Alberg’s sailing along the Magothy under spinnaker. What a perfect day and what an amazingly colorful image. Painting it really appealed to me because of my love of bright colors. Sailing with the Alberg 30 Association is one of my fondest memories!
SARGENT STUDY of artist William Merritt Chase
January 2015 New Year’s Resolution – To do a study of a Sargent painting.
I completed a study of one of my favorite Sargent paintings in large format 36″ x 24″. The original Sargent painting was of a fellow artist, William Merritt Chase.
Here it is, hanging above two of my recently finished Nantucket baskets.
Bull’s Eye and Maybelline- love those lashes!
Focus on the Eyelashes!
These are not close ups of one of my paintings, these are the paintings. I have found you can have a very interesting painting by focusing in on a detail or portion of a whole animal.
Conch you Hear Me?
Inspiration from this painting came from a recent walk on Compo Beach in Westport, CT on a gloriously sunny day with bright blue skies, fluffy white clouds and mild breezes. In the distance, on the point, a lone shell caught my eye by the water’s edge reflecting beautiful colors in the wet sand. Like a conch shell, that particular clam shell spoke to me, so from that experience, I painted ” Conch you hear me?

MEMORIAM to GIBSON- A great Pal
Just got word that my great dog friend died last night.
From my heart, I am so sorry for the loss of a noble, faithful and loyal friend Gibson. And I certainly send my heartfelt words to his ” parents” Dottie and Howard.
I will always remember him as the rubber band dog because he always bounced back so beautifully and with such grace and ease from every adversity thrown his way – cancer and all of its complications for three years.
Gibson will always have a place in my heart for his never-ending spirit.
I was so privileged to have numerous opportunities to paint Gibson and for that I am ever grateful. Here are the images in tribute to an absolutely wonderful friend!
